Exquisitely remembered - Memorial Cremation Diamond from human or pet ashes

The 8th Asia Funeral and Cemetery Expo & Conference (AFE) attracted exhibitors from different countries introducing new concepts of the funeral industry to the city
Some say our loved ones stay with us forever after passing away. Now, some businesses are making it possible not only emotionally but physically - a ring or a piece of jewellery made from the ashes or the hair of your dearly departed are now some of the new ideas brought to Macau at a funeral expo, which seeks to overturn the idea that the funeral industry is just about a coffin or urn.
The 8th Asia Funeral and Cemetery Expo & Conference (AFE) opened at Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre yesterday. The event, first held in Macau and in Asia in 2008, shifted to Hong Kong later and only returned to the Special Administrative Region last year.
New ideas
One of the exhibitors, UK-based memorial diamond retailer and manufacturer Heart In Diamond, told Business Daily that they are also trying to promote a new way of remembering loved ones, in addition to looking for co-operation partners.
“Our headquarters is in United Kingdom, where we are co-operating with more than 600 funeral homes. In the UK, the idea of a memorial diamond is already popular, and most people know about it. This idea in Hong Kong is now getting popular, too,” sales representative Oliver Liu told us.
According to Mr. Liu, the retailer will extract carbon from the ashes or hair of the deceased to make a diamond. Generally speaking, a memorial diamond will need 100 grams of ashes or two grams of hair.
“Most of the Chinese are still very traditional. For example, our clients from Hong Kong and Taiwan may not want to give us a lot of their beloved’s ashes. As such, many of them give us their hair for making the diamond instead,” he said.
The minimum 0.03-carat memorial diamond made from ashes or hair starts from HK$6,500 (US$809.3), the exhibitor said, while those of one carat will cost more than HK$200,000. In addition, the jewellery with fingerprints, according to Jewellery Concepts, starts from 150 euros in silver or 400 euros in gold.
Another new exhibitor at the Expo, JDS Exports Inc, a supplier of Indian handicraft funeral items, told Business Daily that they prefer the expo to be held in Hong Kong rather than Macau.
“My target buyers are those from Europe, United Kingdom, Canada and South America. Hence, I hope the organiser holds this fair in Hong Kong instead of Macau as Hong Kong will attract more international buyers,” owner Faiza Rehman said.
Asked by Business Daily why she does not want to seek co-operation with Chinese enterprises, she said, “They are always trying to depress the prices. Our products are handicrafts and the prices thus should not be bargained.”
Back to Macau
In fact, the fairs director of the organiser, Wilson Tong, said the reason they selected Macau for the launch of the special expo in 2008 was to take advantage of Macau as the ‘Eastern Las Vegas’ to attract more international buyers or exhibitors.
“When the Funeral Expo was first held in Macau in 2008, it was also first held in Asia. As we were trying to introduce the event from Western countries to Asia, we selected Macau due to its tourism, entertainment and MICE facilities that can attract international visitors,” he said.
Although the Expo left the city for Hong Kong for 6 years before returning last year, Mr. Tong said there is not much difference between Macau and Hong Kong with regard to hosting such special-topic conferences or expos.
“Of course, in Hong Kong, it’s more convenient in terms of transport. In addition, there are more [MICE] facilities in Hong Kong, which may be more appealing to some of the exhibitors. The only difference between Hong Kong and Macau in terms of holding such special-topic expos is in the number of hardware [elements]. For example, for AFE, there are not many options in Macau when considering where to hold it. As such, for some clients, they may think Hong Kong has a bigger market,” Mr. Tong remarked.
The fairs director estimated that 2,000 professional buyers from 38 countries would attend the expo during the three days, a year-on-year increase of between 5 and 10 per cent.
In addition to the expo, the organiser will provide 30 conference sessions with more than 30 speakers with topics revolving around green funerals, cemeteries and corporate development.
The future AFE will only be held once every two years rather than annually, Mr. Tong said, indicating that the next AFE will also be hosted by Macau.
